REGULATIONS EDITION 2026
Everything you need to know to take part in Paraty Brazil by UTMB. Please read the Race Regulations and appendices carefully, where you will find detailed information and answers to any questions you may have.
To take part in the Paraty Brazil by UTMB event, especially in the courses with greater physical and technical demands, it is essential to:
- Be fully aware of the race distance and its specific challenges, and be properly prepared to face them.
- Have developed, prior to the race, real personal self-sufficiency in a mountain and trail environment, in order to manage situations inherent to this type of event, including but not limited to:
- Being able to cope, without external assistance, with potentially severe weather conditions related to the course characteristics (night, wind, cold, fog, or rain).
- Being able to handle, even when isolated, physical or mental difficulties resulting from extreme fatigue, digestive issues, muscle or joint pain, and minor injuries.
- Understand that the role of the organization is not to manage or solve individual runner issues.
- Acknowledge that in trail and mountain running, safety primarily depends on each runner’s ability to anticipate and adapt to expected or unexpected challenges.
- Inform and educate their companions about respecting the environment, local communities, and the race regulations.
Participants are expected to follow the principles of semi-autonomy/self-sufficiency. They must be prepared to carry their own fluids, nutrition, and mandatory equipment (including items required for adverse weather conditions) between aid stations. Runners must also be capable, within the course safety guidelines, of handling difficult or changing conditions.
This principle of self-sufficiency implies the following rules:
Each runner must carry all mandatory equipment with them at all times during the race. This equipment must be transported in a non-transferable backpack throughout the course. At any point during the race, race officials may inspect the backpack and its contents. Runners are required to comply respectfully with these checks. Refusal to do so may result in disqualification.
Aid stations provide food and drinks for on-site consumption only. The organization supplies water and/or energy drink for refilling hydration systems. It is the runner’s responsibility to leave each aid station with enough food and fluids to reach the next one safely.
For the PTR 108 course, personal assistance is allowed only at designated aid stations and strictly within the area reserved for this purpose, subject to the aid station coordinator’s approval. Assistance may be provided by one single person only. Medical assistance by a member of the runner’s personal team is strictly prohibited. Only basic care is permitted (such as massage or blister treatment), and the runner must remain seated in a chair (lying down is not allowed). The rest of the aid station area is strictly reserved for registered runners.
It is strictly forbidden to accompany or be accompanied along any part of the race course by a person who is not officially registered, except in clearly marked spectator areas near aid stations. Any runner who accepts being accompanied outside authorized areas violates the principle of semi-autonomy. Race officials or coordinators who witness such violations are authorized to apply penalties in accordance with the race rules.
(*) External support for runners is allowed exclusively at the following checkpoints of the PTR 108 course:
- Taquari (33.6 km)
- Trutaria Rio Manso (76.6 km)
External assistance is prohibited at all other checkpoints and at any other point along the course.
For the PTR 58, PTR 34, PTR 25, PTR 17, and RUN 7 courses, no external assistance is permitted at any time during the race.
To ensure the safety of all participants, each athlete is strongly advised to carry all items listed in the Mandatory Equipment Checklist available on the official event website, specific to each course. All mandatory equipment must be carried for the entire duration of the race, even if certain items are not in use at a given moment.
Equipment checks may be conducted in an organized and/or random manner at any time during the race. Penalties or disqualification may be applied to runners who fail to carry all required items, in accordance with the penalties section of the race regulations.
The mandatory checklist includes essential gear designed to handle adverse and changing weather conditions, such as cold temperatures, wind, and heavy rain, which are common in trail and mountain environments. All clothing items must be properly sized and must not be altered after manufacturing. Mandatory gear must be carried in the race backpack identified at check-in and may not be exchanged during the event.
In order to reduce plastic waste, no disposable utensils will be provided at any checkpoints or aid stations. Runners are encouraged to follow the BYOU principle (Bring Your Own Utensils) and carry their own reusable utensils for consuming hot meals at aid stations.
If a runner chooses to use trekking poles, they must carry them for the entire race. Picking them up or leaving them at any point along the course is not permitted. The use of headphones for listening to music is tolerated, provided it does not compromise the runner’s safety. Headphones must be removed when crossing roads, at checkpoints, and whenever interacting with race staff or safety personnel.
Mandatory Equipment: https://paraty.utmb.world/pt/races-runners/runners/mandatory
Bib numbers will be issued to each runner upon presentation of a valid photo ID.
The bib number must be worn on the front at all times and must remain completely visible throughout the race. It should always be placed over all clothing. The runner's name and partner logos must not be altered or obscured. The bib number serves as a pass to access rescue transport, checkpoints, medical stations, bathrooms, showers, and the drop bag delivery and collection areas.
The bib number will only be removed if the runner refuses to comply with the instructions of the race director. If the runner withdraws from the race, the bib number will be marked and deactivated.
At race kit collection, each participant will receive two drop bags. After placing their chosen items inside and properly closing the bag, the runner must leave it next to the Kit Collection area within the Expo. The drop bags will be accessible at the following checkpoints:
- Taquari (33.6 km)
- Trutaria Rio Manso (76.6 km)
Only the bags provided by the organization or the official UTMB World Series bag will be transported. Trekking poles are not allowed inside the drop bags. As the contents of the bags are neither checked nor monitored, the race organizer assumes no responsibility for the items placed inside. Runners are strongly advised not to include valuables.
How to collect your drop bags at the finish area?
Drop bags will be returned to the runner or to a family member or friend only upon presentation of the race bib. Bags must be collected no later than Sunday (September 20) at 12:00 PM. Any bags not collected by this deadline will be donated or discarded by the organization.
The organization will arrange transport of drop bags back to the finish area for runners who officially withdraw from the race. Return timing will depend on logistical constraints, and full return before the end of the event cannot be guaranteed. Since bag contents are not checked, no claims regarding missing or damaged items will be accepted at the finish. Runners are advised not to place valuables inside.
The drop bag return location will be the same as the original drop-off area.
By registering for a UTMB event, participants commit to respecting the environment and the natural spaces they traverse. In particular:
It is strictly prohibited to leave litter (gel wrappers, papers, organic waste, plastic packaging, etc.) along the course. Trash bins are available at each aid station and must be used. Race staff will conduct random checks along the routes.
All participants must keep their trash and packaging until they can dispose of them in the bins available at the aid stations. The organization encourages runners to bring a trash bag to transport their waste to the next aid station. Plastic bags for dirty papers will be provided with the bib number and must be used in urgent situations near the trails.
It is imperative to follow the marked paths without cutting corners.
No disposable utensils (cutlery, cups, bowls) will be distributed at the support bases and aid stations. This measure aims to reduce plastic consumption by runners. Therefore, we invite you to bring your own utensils if you want hot meals at the aid stations.
Along the race course, there are aid stations where runners can receive food and drinks. These stations provide refreshments for on-site consumption. The organization supplies still water and electrolyte/sports drink for refilling bottles and hydration packs, and the use of personal cups is mandatory.
For any food that requires a bowl or container, each runner must carry their own reusable container. When leaving an aid station, runners must ensure they have enough food and fluids to safely reach the next one.
Only runners wearing a visible and officially checked race bib are allowed access to aid stations, as well as authorized support for PTR 108 at designated locations.
A complete list of aid stations and the types of food and beverages available at each one can be found on our official website.
There will be passage checkpoints at some of the aid stations. Random checks may also occur at undisclosed locations by the organization. Runners may be asked to show their mandatory equipment at some of the aid stations and at certain safety points along the course.
Unexpected checkpoints will be set up along the route. Their locations will not be disclosed.
The course markings are made with ribbons featuring the event logo, arrow signs, and reflective materials that reflect the runner's flashlight, making them easily visible at night.
WARNING: If you cannot see any course markings, turn back!
All participants, regardless of distance, must provide a medical certificate stamped and signed by a licensed physician, including their professional registration number. The certificate must have been issued within 12 months prior to the event date and must confirm that the athlete is medically fit to participate.
The medical certificate must be uploaded through the runner’s UTMB account, in the athlete dashboard, no later than August 31, 2026.
There are several medical aid points along the course. These stations are directly linked to the command center and are intended to assist any runner who requires medical help.
It is the responsibility of any runner in need of assistance or who is injured to call for help by:
- Going to a medical station
- Calling the command center (the phone number should be saved on their mobile)
- Asking another runner to request help
- Using the SOS function in the LiveTrail app
Runners must assist anyone in danger and alert the command center. If a runner is unable to call the command center and the situation is an absolute emergency, they can call one of the national emergency services directly (especially if they are in an area where only emergency calls are possible): 193.
Several unexpected events, including adverse weather conditions, may cause you to wait for help longer than expected. Therefore, your safety depends on the quality of the items you packed in your backpack.
All medical personnel, paramedics, first aid staff, and guides, as well as anyone designated by the race management, are authorized to:
- Remove any participant deemed unable to continue the event
- Require any competitor to use mandatory equipment
- Evacuate all runners considered to be in danger
- Direct runners to the most appropriate medical center
A runner who is treated by a doctor or reached by the search and rescue team must submit to the authority of the professional and agree to accept their decisions. If the runner's health condition justifies intravenous treatment, they must withdraw from the race.
There is a medical center in Paraty available for runners with serious medical issues. Comfort care is based on the medical team's decision, within the limits of available care.
Runners must remain on the marked path, even if they choose to sleep. All runners who voluntarily venture off the marked course or outside the allowed time limit will no longer be under the organization's responsibility.
The time limits to complete each race are:
- PTR 108: 30 hours
- PTR 58: 16 hours
- PTR 34: 9 hours
- PTR 25: 6 hours
- PTR 17: 4 hours 30 minutes
- RUN 7: 2 hours
Cut-off times for departure from the main aid stations are available on the event website and in the Athlete Guide. In case of changes (see Exceptional Conditions), updated cut-off times will be communicated during the race briefing or via SMS/text message.
When the start is organized in multiple waves, the maximum allowed time and all cut-off times are calculated based on the start time of the LAST wave.
Time limits are designed to allow participants to reach the finish line within the official timeframe, including possible stops (rest, meals, etc.). To be authorized to continue, all runners must leave each checkpoint/aid station before the official cut-off time, regardless of their arrival time at that location.
Any participant who withdraws from the race and wishes to continue along the course may only do so after returning their race bib. Runners who withdraw are under their own responsibility and will no longer be supported by the organizer. It is strongly recommended that any runner who withdraws use the transportation provided by the organization to return to the finish area.
Except in the case of injury, a runner wishing to withdraw from the race must do so only at a checkpoint. They must inform the person in charge of the checkpoint or communicate their withdrawal through the LiveTrail app and notify the command center.
If a runner opts to withdraw while on the course between two checkpoints, they must reach the nearest checkpoint and report their withdrawal.
Runners who withdraw must keep their bib number, as it serves as a pass to access transport, meals, treatment rooms, etc.
The repatriation works as follows:
- Transport is available at some aid stations to take back to Paraty runners who have withdrawn. These locations are published in the Runner's Guide. Transport will not be immediate and may involve some waiting time.
- Runners who abandon at any checkpoint where transport is not available, but whose health does not require evacuation, must return as quickly as possible, using their own means, to the nearest repatriation point.
- Regarding aid stations or safety points accessible by car or 4x4:
- After the closing of the aid station or safety points, the organization may repatriate runners who have withdrawn and have not yet left the aid station.
- In case of adverse weather conditions that justify a partial or total stoppage of the race, the organization will arrange transport for all runners as quickly as possible.
No athlete may start later than 10 minutes after the official start time of the race for any of the distances.
Upon finishing the race, the runner will receive a finisher medal. Finishers will have access to an aid station located in the historic center of Paraty, with access restricted exclusively to runners.
The organization of the race is part of the #jogolimpo program by ABCD – Brazilian Authority for Doping Control. Any athlete registered for the race is subject to anti-doping control, which may be conducted randomly across all distances, either before or after the race. An athlete who refuses to participate in an anti-doping test will be disqualified.
The list of prohibited substances and procedures is published on the ABCD website, which follows the studies of AMA-WADA. Click here to access.
For each race, there will be:
An Overall Ranking – men and women;
An Age Group Ranking – also men and women (see details below for each category).
The top five male athletes and the top five female athletes in the Overall Ranking will receive a trophy and prize money (payment will be made within up to 60 days after the event).
The first-place male and female athlete in each age group will receive a trophy.
Trophy Ceremony
- Trophies will be awarded exclusively during the official awards ceremony and presented directly to the athlete.
- Athletes must be present at the ceremony in order to receive their trophy.
- In case of absence, the trophy will not be delivered later, will not be shipped, and will not be available for collection after the event.
- Attendance at the awards ceremony is the sole responsibility of the awarded athlete.

Civil Liability
The organizer holds civil liability insurance during the event. This insurance covers the financial consequences of liability attributed to the organizer, its staff, and participants.
Personal Accident Insurance for Runners
Each athlete is strongly advised to hold personal accident insurance that covers search and evacuation expenses. This coverage is important to ensure the safety and well-being of participants in the event of an incident during the race. The choice of insurance provider is the athlete’s responsibility, and it is essential to verify that the selected policy covers all potential emergency situations.
The choice of evacuation method and hospital facility rests solely with the organization. Any costs resulting from the use of exceptional rescue or evacuation services will be the responsibility of the rescued individual, who must also arrange and cover their own return from the evacuation location. It is the runner’s sole responsibility to submit a claim to their personal insurance provider within the required timeframe.
Runners who have sponsors or use a third-party brand for promotional purposes may only display that third-party brand on their clothing and equipment during the competition. It is not permitted to use, transport, or display other items, including but not limited to flags, banners, or signs, along the race course, including the finish line. Failure to comply with this provision may result in a penalty determined at the discretion of the respective race directors.
In accordance with our ethical charter, any ostentatious display of political images or messages during the event is prohibited.
In an ongoing effort to increase and encourage women's participation in trail running, UTMB has implemented a new pregnancy policy across all UTMB World Series races.
The policy is eligible for:
- Athletes who are pregnant
- Athletes with a pregnant partner
- Athletes adopting or birthing via surrogacy
We offer a full refund or a deferred entry, valid for up to 2 years, for pregnant women, partners, and parents adopting or birthing via surrogacy.
